Hi, I’m Doug Russ, and I want to tell you a little bit about my journey and why Cabinet Zone has become my passion project here in Southwest Florida.
My story with construction started early. I began framing houses when I was just 15 years old, learning the trade from the ground up. That hands-on experience taught me something invaluable: there’s no substitute for quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. I went on to earn both business management and construction management degrees from the University of Minnesota, but honestly, those early years working with my hands taught me just as much about what makes a project successful.
By my mid-twenties, I was running my own construction business with lots of employees. I became a union carpenter and union business owner, and over the years, I owned seven successful businesses in total. My partners and I built everything you can imagine – churches, schools, residential apartment buildings, high-end homes. We covered the full spectrum of construction projects, and each one taught me something new about quality, timing, and customer expectations.
But here’s the thing: as I got into my forties, managing large crews and multiple big projects became incredibly stressful. I found myself getting further away from what I truly loved about construction – the actual hands-on work and the personal connections with customers. So I made a decision. I sold off several of my businesses and moved down to Florida to retire, or so I thought.
The funny thing about retirement is that when you love what you do, you can’t really stop. I wanted to keep myself busy, and more importantly, I missed the satisfaction that comes from working directly with homeowners to create something beautiful and functional for their families. That’s when I discovered Cabinet Zone was available, and it felt like the perfect opportunity.
I ended up purchasing Cabinet Zone and I’m back doing the things that I love and that is working with my hands and working with customers directly. This business brings together everything I’ve learned over decades in construction with the personal touch I was missing in those larger operations.
What I bring to Cabinet Zone is an extensive background in every aspect of construction, from the technical skills I developed starting at 15 to the business management expertise I gained running multiple successful companies. I understand what it takes to deliver quality work on time and within budget because I’ve been doing it for over 30 years. But more importantly, I understand what customers really want from their contractor.
Customer satisfaction is probably one of the highest things on my list of what’s important to my business. When I work with families here in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, and throughout Lee County and Collier County, my goal is simple: I want to help you through the design process to get you exactly what you want and ensure your needs are completely 100% taken care of. At the end of the day, I want you to be very, very happy with your investment.
The values that guide everything we do at Cabinet Zone come from my Midwest upbringing: Honesty, integrity, thoughtfulness, quality control, timeliness, and cleanliness. These aren’t just words to me – they’re the foundation of how we operate every single day.
What I want you to know is that we have a full brick and mortar office here. We aren’t going anywhere. I live here. My partner Barry has been here for 25 years, and I’ve been here for 10. This is our community, and we’re committed to building lasting relationships, not just completing projects.
My ultimate goal is for you to tell your neighbors that “Cabinet Zone was the very best. Things got done in a timely manner, everyone we dealt with was clean and professional.” That’s the experience I want every single customer to have – one that exceeds their expectations and makes them genuinely excited about their kitchen or bathroom.
